Abstract. Research objective is studying of category "university city", identification of comparative criteria
of the university cities. On the basis of the analysis of international experience, a number of signs of the university
cities is systematized and expanded. In work an attempt to identify the university city among a set of various types
of the cities is made. On the example of a number of foreign countries (Great Britain, France) and domestic experience
criteria of development of the university cities are studied. The scientific novelty consists in author's allocation
of the list of comparative criteria of the university cities, systematized on groups.
