Филология № 66. С. 261-275Abstract: The paper aims to represent the relevant issues concerning the status of Scots and its use in literature. It also covers a range of controversial interpretations concerning the status of Scots and its reputation. By drawing analogies and highlighting the differences, the paper seeks to reveal the range of shared and unshared attitudes towards Scots and its significance in the literary discourse. Our study shows thatScots is not regarded as a tool to be used to fight for a political cause, neither it is a means through which people identify themselves. In contemporary writing Scots performs a huge role in creating new meanings and associations, enriching the text with connotations and imparting special meaning to the text.
